Heyam duhkham anagatam
Prevent the suffering that is yet to come.

—Yoga Sutra II.16

Heyam: to be avoided
Dukham: pain, suffering
Anagatam: which has not yet come

The Pain Which Is Yet To Come Is To Be Avoided

This is my go to sutra-:

The Sanskrit phrase “hayam dukham anajatam” comes from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and it’s translated as “future pain is to be avoided.” This sutra is often interpreted as emphasizing the importance of foresight and proactive measures in the practice of yoga. T.K.V. Desikachar, a renowned yoga teacher, expanded on this concept by highlighting the significance of avoiding actions that may lead to future suffering.

Desikachar’s interpretation encourages practitioners to cultivate mindfulness and awareness in their actions, making choices that promote well-being and prevent future discomfort. It’s about developing a deeper understanding of cause and effect, recognizing how our present actions can impact our future experiences. By aligning our behaviors with this principle, we can navigate our lives with greater intentionality and minimize unnecessary suffering.
